Three million industrial robots were in use worldwide in 2021, 10 percent more than the year before. One of the most experienced Swiss companies in this booming industry is located in Aargau: Robotec Solutions. In an interview, CEO Nick Koch explains what makes robots from Seon so special, why Aargau is the right location, and why the company has reason to celebrate.
Mr. Koch, you are planning a big event. What is it about?
On September 15th and 16th, we are celebrating our Open-House event with the groundbreaking of our new company building. We moved just five years ago, but we are growing so quickly that another new building became necessary. We now employ over 50 people worldwide, 35 of whom are in Seon alone. We will move into the new building, a 7-million-franc project, next summer.
What exactly will take place there?
The Open-House event offers our clients the opportunity to get to know our production. We expect 250 guests who want to look behind the scenes. We will showcase the latest technical developments in robotic automation and present 15 exhibits that are either under construction or live in action.
Your production facility in Seon has become too small again. What is the reason for the continuous growth of your company?
Thirty years ago, we were pioneers in robotic automation in Switzerland. Today, industrial robots are almost a "commodity," and we naturally feel the increasing global competition. But it only makes us better: We always offer tailor-made solutions of the best Swiss quality and have excellent experts. We train them ourselves - in my view, the most effective method to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and form a competent, powerful team.
What sets you apart from other market participants?
Our USP is that we not only deliver robotic technology but "solutions." This means we precisely determine our customer's needs, jointly design the end product, plan the procurement of components, assemble them, equip the device with the appropriate software, and train the operating personnel. Everything from a single source, state-of-the-art, and based on thirty years of experience. I call this our "doer DNA."
Which industries do your customers come from?
From all areas of the manufacturing industry (General Industry), with certain focuses on medical technology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, logistics, and metal processing. In Romandy, watch and luxury goods manufacturers as well as microtechnology producers are among our customers. We have many customers in Switzerland, but we basically sell worldwide.
Why did you build the larger production facility in Seon again?
Although we think globally, we are firmly rooted in Aargau. Even at the founding of the company, the location promotion supported us. The network we built back then, also with the help of cantonal institutions, we were able to expand excellently. There are three good universities around Seon, from whose scientific expertise we have greatly benefited.
What else speaks for Aargau?
For us as an industrial company, the infrastructure is important. I must say: This canton is a strong production and technology location, many of our suppliers are, for example, nearby. Another important point: most of our employees come from Aargau. There are highly qualified people here who pursue their technical profession with passion.
